The servers hosting ChatGPT consume over 500,000 kWh of energy per day

According to The New Yorker, ChatGPT, an extremely popular chatbot, consumes vast amounts of energy to process over 200 million requests daily. The total energy consumption by this algorithm exceeds the average household consumption in the United States by 17,000 kWh.

Experts estimate that ChatGPT requires over half a million kilowatt-hours of energy daily to function properly. With further development of this chatbot by OpenAI, it is expected that its energy requirements will only increase. The same applies to other areas utilizing generative artificial intelligence. For instance, integrating generative AI technology into Google's search engine is projected to increase energy consumption by 29 billion kWh per year.

Alex de Fries, a data specialist, emphasizes: "Artificial intelligence demands tremendous energy resources. Each server used for its operation consumes as much energy as several dozen typical households in the UK combined. These figures are growing rapidly."

It is forecasted that by 2027, the entire artificial intelligence sector will consume between 85 to 134 terawatt-hours of energy annually, accounting for 0.5% of the world's total electricity consumption. Currently, Samsung consumes around 23 terawatt-hours, Google slightly over 12 terawatt-hours, and Microsoft just over 10 terawatt-hours to maintain the functionality of their data centers, networks, and user devices.
